Paper Lights

I’ve been using Jie Qi’s paper circuits lessons from the MIT High Low Tech group for workshops for a while. I have a workshop coming up soon, so I wanted to brush up on paper circuits. I bought LEDs for the workshop that are too small for the group I’m using them with, so I’m using them myself (rough, I know). Jie Qi recently launched Chibitronics, which takes her paper circuits even further through the use of stickers. I got some as a Christmas gift, and I’m likely going to use them for the workshop. They’re easier to handle than the smaller surface mount LEDs, and they’re fun (who doesn’t love stickers?).

I tried out the Chibitronics LEDs with a handcarved stamp project. It’s a simple flower with a circle stamp for the center and a petal stamp to build the flower. The LEDs are on a piece of paper behind the stamped paper. I like the way it turned out.

I wanted to try out some of the tiny LEDs I accidentally bought. I put them into my everyday notebook (currently, a Baron Fig Confidant):

I left a blank piece of paper in front of the page with the LEDs on it, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to draw/stamp/whatever. Then Björk’s new album was leaked, so she released it early. Björk always brings it with design, so I took inspiration from the cover of Vulnicura, on which she is pictured wearing a cape and hood that makes me think of dandelion seeds:

I drew dandelion seeds in my notebook, spaced so they light up when the LEDs are on.
